This one of a kind antique sampler was woven in Rabat, the historical capital of Morocco in the 1800s. It presents a geometric layout of elements from Islamic architecture, including variations on the mehrab prayer arch. These motifs travelled across the Mediterranean from Ottoman Anatolia, where they originated, and they established themselves in Morocco in the early 1800s. The carpets woven there were of large Kelleh size, averaging 4 x 2 meters usually, making this unique vagireh even more spectacular for its odd size.
