One of the finest & richest antique Qoms I have handed, with very tasteful coloration reliant on 100% all natural dyes. The turquoise sky blue is really something.
This specific design is called Ilyati meaning โtribalโ, and was popular among the Qajar Dynasty themselves because it reminded them of their proud nomadic roots before they rose to power in 1785. As outlined in my book, the Qajars periodically left their gilded palaces in Tehran and camped out with their whole court in the great outdoors in northern Iran. Very few Tehran carpets were woven with this style, of which Iโm proud to say I have some in my private collection.
When Reza Shah demolished the old town, all the weavers and craftsmen moved south of the city. Many settled in the village of Qom where they carried on making rugs. The first generation of Qom carpets in the 1930s is absolutely inspired by Qajar Tehran styles and quite near in quality.
The present lot is the first and only Qom Iโve ever seen in the Ilyati style. Itโs also signed by the weaver! A superb collection piece.

I first met Dr. Maktabi as a lecturer on carpet history and was captivated by his passion for the subject. Only later I knew him as a dealer, though even in our financial transactions, Hadi has been a gentle guide and friend. He has understood my taste and interests and made wonderful suggestions, but never in a pushy way. That is to say I have enjoyed working with him on several levels and wish to continue our excellent relations and dealings far into the future. A. As a carpet collector of 30 years, I have noticed a decline in the amount of truly unique and high quality carpets on the market. I have also noted a decline in the knowledge of merchants, generally. Hadi Maktabi stands against this trend as a both a curator for and an educator of his clients. His offerings are well-researched, museum quality carpets that are both singular and expertly chosen. In dealing with Hadi, I have experienced excellent communication, a high standard of service and extremely pleasant interactions. Warren D., Hong Kong ๐ญ๐ฐ
