Why, you ask?
What brings all these names together?
In 1969 the hugely successful & influential careers of Eric & Sadegh overlapped, albeit miles and light years away. Rug n roll!
Somewhat simultaneously they both drew inspiration from the 12the century epic romance of Layla & Majnoun, a heartbreaking poem composed by the legendary Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi.
Eric Clapton wrote this beautiful song โI Am Yoursโ whose lyrics were lifted verbatim from a translation of Nizamiโs Khamsa, a collection of his 5๏ธโฃ poems. The passage dealt with the yearning Majnoun felt for his beloved Layla.
Around the same time, Grand Master Sadegh wove this beautiful pictorial rug whose subjectโyou guessed itโwas a scene from the tragic tale of L&M. The only major difference (no, Iโm not talking electric guitars and silk warps) is that Sadegh portrays them in a rare moment of happiness whereas Claptonโs song is markedly more poignant and plain sad.
Fun fact: Nizamiโs poem was translated into Italian around the 14th century but adapted into a Renaissance Italian setting. Verona was the locale, Romeo & Juliet were their names. This version of the tale of the two star crossed lovers is the one that was in turn adapted into a play by Shakespeare.
โI practically furnished my entire home with carpets from Hadi. The process was not only a joy but it was also a learning experience for me. Hadi was super helpful in identifying the right pieces for my home that would both work with my taste, budget, sizes required and that would be a good investment for my family. Hadiโs collection is second to none, and his knowledge and service is truly the blessing on top.โ Amr Banaja, Public Investment Fund, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia ๐ธ๐ฆ
You can't only be a customer of Hadi Maktabi. While his main purpose is rug dealing, he starts with story telling and ends with history selling. That's what I call high-end art curating and closing it all with an entertaining friendship. George El Hani, CEO Levica, Lebanon ๐ฑ๐ง
