The legendary master weaver was, along with Mulla Mohammad Hasan Mohtasham, the single most important carpet artist of the 19th century. He is credited with introducing the Gol Farang rose bouquet design to Persian carpets (this being a stellar example) and was the personal weaver to Nassereddine Shah Qajar during the 1860s thru to the 1880s. Ostad Hossein designed and wove remarkably large and beautiful carpets for the Shah. A brilliant small one survived in the Golestan Palace and was moved in 1977 to the Carpet Museum of Iran.
This harmonious rug is flowery delight. In a sense it is a bouquet of roses itself. The senses of color, poise, scale and balance are mature and confident, tasteful and pretty. The Grand Master's famous signature crowns the composition in the upper border, along with a date. Using such dated examples I was able, in my PhD thesis, to trace the trajectory and development of his style.
Hadi Maktabi and his staff provide comprehensive and thoughtful services to collectors and textile buyers worldwide. His knowledge of antique oriental rugs and textiles, including many fine offerings from the Levant, is unsurpassed. We have been loyal customers for over five years and have visited his Beirut premises. He has worked with us upon several occasions to select the exact Ottoman and Levantine pieces we wanted for our collection. You can be sure of quality and honesty when dealing with Hadi. I first met Dr. Maktabi as a lecturer on carpet history and was captivated by his passion for the subject. Only later I knew him as a dealer, though even in our financial transactions, Hadi has been a gentle guide and friend. He has understood my taste and interests and made wonderful suggestions, but never in a pushy way. That is to say I have enjoyed working with him on several levels and wish to continue our excellent relations and dealings far into the future. A. I must say this one of the most enriching carpet purchase experiences I ever had. This was not a mere transaction but more an experience about art and history. Dr Maktabi's experience and knowledge in this space is second to none. Highly recommended! R.A., Doha, Qatar
