And look what I found among my dadβs treasury hoard of fine antique rugs: a mint condition Qashqai from the 1880s, woven by the Shekarlu clan. It is very impressive & dramatic in its size, and boasts a total lack of the standard blue and red tones that define this type. My favourite elements are the swooping peacocks π¦ with their bushy tails πͺΆ
The name Shekarlu derives from βshegarβ Ψ΄Ϊ―Ψ± which in English becomes βsugarβ, referring to powdered sugar. Much as the English βcandyβ derives from Farsi qand ΩΩΨ― meaning rock sugar. Anyway, it seems this clan of the Qashqai confederation had a history with the ancient sugar tradeβ or as I like to think of it, their rugs were simply too sweet. Eye candy and tactile dessert.
I first met Dr. Maktabi as a lecturer on carpet history and was captivated by his passion for the subject. Only later I knew him as a dealer, though even in our financial transactions, Hadi has been a gentle guide and friend. He has understood my taste and interests and made wonderful suggestions, but never in a pushy way. That is to say I have enjoyed working with him on several levels and wish to continue our excellent relations and dealings far into the future. A. To me personally there is no surprise, event or frankly anything that gets me more excited than the purchase of a treasured piece of understated artwork such as that of a proper vintage/antique carpet. The sourcing, grading and authentication of these pieces is no small task but is of the highest importance. Through the respected dealer Hadi Maktabi all that is guaranteed, and rest assured the one thing I can guarantee personally as a client is a first class service from the initial selection process till it gets delivered right to your door step. It was an undeniably special experience, with hundreds of carpets to choose from, will definitely be visiting again. Thank you dear Hadi. Habeeb Al Monawer, Kuwait π°πΌ
The idea of purchasing valuable rugs and other artwork online from an overseas seller is daunting for several reasons, not least of which is the fact that, not being able to examine and feel the rug for yourself, you are never entirely certain that the origin, age or condition of the rug corresponds with the dealerβs description. For me, I could never take this step unless I had absolute trust in the integrity of the dealer, and my recent experience with Hadi confirms that my faith in him was well placed. Every detail of the antique rug expertly explained by Hadi was accurate and when I finally received the actual rug, it turned out to be even more stunning than his photos depicted. F.
