Story

One of the finest Kashan carpets to ever grace our collection and also one of the best to ever live. The quality of the Kork baby lambswool is exquisite, as are the sweet natural dyes (please ask for closeups if interested to buy). Aesthetically speaking, the Shah Abbas all over pattern of lotus flowers and arabesque palmettes is more intricately rewarding than the "classical" more common types seen in the 1930s and 1940s.

The carpet is rare for a number of reasons:
- this particular creamy shade of ivory, marking a transition from the Mohtasham school of the 19th century. By the 1920s dark indigo blue was the dominant color in Kashan weavings.
- the somewhat squarish size
- the elaborate detailing and layout of the Shah Abbas
- the distinguished provenance of the piece, in a leading German collection since the 1960s with documentation.
- utterly perfect condition

What our customers say!

Hadi Maktabi and his staff provide comprehensive and thoughtful services to collectors and textile buyers worldwide. His knowledge of antique oriental rugs and textiles, including many fine offerings from the Levant, is unsurpassed. We have been loyal customers for over five years and have visited his Beirut premises. As a carpet collector of 30 years, I have noticed a decline in the amount of truly unique and high quality carpets on the market. I have also noted a decline in the knowledge of merchants, generally. Hadi Maktabi stands against this trend as a both a curator for and an educator of his clients. His offerings are well-researched, museum quality carpets that are both singular and expertly chosen. In dealing with Hadi, I have experienced excellent communication, a high standard of service and extremely pleasant interactions. Warren D., Hong Kong πŸ‡πŸ‡°
