Very very of these Pardeh doorway rugs survive. Almost all of the ones I've seen belong to the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad. Otherwise they would have graced the doorways of royal Qajar palaces. This carpet would have hung from its upper section in place of a door, so that visitors to the princely court would pass within its flaps prior to being greeted by the Shah or Shahzadeh. This would have kept the separation of public and private space clear and regulated the distinction between royals and commoners. One of three in our private collection, it stands out for the remarkable extra section at the top which would have been draped backwards along the ledge it hung down from. The carpet bears a number of pictorial cartouches depicting romantic couples from Persian mythology: Khosrow & Shirine, Homa & Homayoun, Leila & Majnoun. A museum piece, something on another level entirely!
To me personally there is no surprise, event or frankly anything that gets me more excited than the purchase of a treasured piece of understated artwork such as that of a proper vintage/antique carpet. The sourcing, grading and authentication of these pieces is no small task but is of the highest importance. Through the respected dealer Hadi Maktabi all that is guaranteed, and rest assured the one thing I can guarantee personally as a client is a first class service from the initial selection process till it gets delivered right to your door step. It was an undeniably special experience, with hundreds of carpets to choose from, will definitely be visiting again. Thank you dear Hadi. Habeeb Al Monawer, Kuwait 🇰🇼
